BEHIND THE RESULT

The achievement

Aryan Singh grew up in a farming family in Kota, Rajasthan, watching his parents and grandparents work the fields. In Class 10, during the lockdown of 2020, he conceived an idea to reduce that labour: a multi-task robot for farmers. He built it over four years at the Atal Tinkering Lab of SR Public School, Kota, with initial funding and incubation from iStart, the Rajasthan government’s startup initiative; the first prototype was completed in 2023. On 22 January 2024, Aryan, then 17, received the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in the Science and Technology category from President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi — the only Science and Technology recipient among the 19 children honoured.

The machine

In his published interviews, Aryan describes a solar-powered rover fitted with cameras that analyse the crop’s condition as it moves, a dropper that can sow seeds, irrigate and spray, and soil-moisture sensors that help check soil health and look for pests. Its artificial intelligence is trained on farming data, and through the Internet of Things a farmer can operate it remotely from an app he developed — “if you want to use the robot from Jaipur city and your crops are in Kota, you can simply log in to the application that I have developed and use it,” he told PTI. He says the prototype cost ₹50,000, and that it would cost less if manufactured in large numbers. PTI reported that his proposal had also been praised by the Atal Innovation Mission, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and the then Agriculture Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar.

A spark to explore

What is one hard, repetitive job in your own family’s daily life that a small, affordable machine could make easier? That is a question from us, not part of his record.
