BEHIND THE RESULT

The person helped comes first

Rohan Ramchandra Bahir was named in the Bravery category of the 2023 national child awards. Contemporary coverage and the government’s message of appreciation describe him helping a woman who was drowning in a river. The essential achievement is the rescue of another person. This draft does not invent a conversation at the scene, reconstruct the incident moment by moment, or add personal details about the woman. The sources provide a public recognition record, while the exact date of the incident remains a separate research question.

Recognition is a different event

The government announcement is dated 23 January 2023, and the Prime Minister’s message of appreciation followed on 24 January. The NDTV account was published on 25 January. Those three dates describe the award and its coverage; none should be substituted for an unestablished rescue date. The government citation also gives a river and place description that needs geographic cross-checking before it is used in a detailed account. We therefore keep the location general here and do not use the award date to calculate an age at the incident.

Helping safely is something adults can teach

An account of bravery is not an instruction to copy a dangerous rescue. For young readers, a useful follow-up is a conversation with a trusted adult about recognising danger, alerting adults and finding appropriate help. This is our reflection, not a judgement on a decision made in an emergency. You do not need to enter water or recreate an incident to understand why helping matters. The question for a classroom discussion could be how a community makes trained help and clear safety information easier to reach.

Vyoma Priya

Coimbatore child honoured posthumously with the PMRBP 2025 for Bravery — the official citation records that she “lost her young life while selflessly trying to save a six-year-old child during an electrical accident, displaying extraordinary courage beyond her years.” Age 9 in the official list; her mother Archana Sivaramakrishnan told ANI she was 8 on the evening in 2024 when a slide in their apartment-complex park, electrified by a damaged underground cable, endangered a six-year-old boy and Vyoma went to his aid. Her mother received the award on her behalf. Whether the boy survived is asserted only by a low-authority aggregator and is not claimed.

Aged 9 in the official award list (December 2025); her mother recalls she was 8 when it happened, in 2024
