The achievement

In February 2025, Guinness World Records reported that Maharashtra’s Aaryan Shukla had set six mental-calculation records in Dubai. One challenge involved adding 100 four-digit numbers: his recorded time was 30.9 seconds.

Another involved adding 50 five-digit numbers in 18.71 seconds.

Behind the stopwatch

The report described a 14-year-old who had begun practising mental calculation at six and entered international competition at eight. It also described a substantial daily practice routine.

These results belong to particular record challenges; they are not a measure of every kind of intelligence.

✳ A spark to explore

For a reader who enjoys numbers, the interesting question is how a difficult task becomes familiar through practice. Try a small calculation puzzle, write down your method, then compare it with a friend’s. Speed can be one goal; understanding why your method works is another.
