Three medals in Thailand

Jyoti, born on 28 December 2007, is a para-athlete from Ellenabad in Haryana’s Sirsa district, and she was 17 years old when she received the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in December 2025. Born with one leg shorter than the other, she competes in the F57 class for seated throwers, across the shot put, discus and javelin. She is a Class XI student of PM Shri Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Odhan.

Her talent was spotted at a 2022 Aditya Mehta Foundation camp in Haridwar, and she trained for two years in Hyderabad. At the World Abilitysport Games in Thailand in December 2023, she won three under-20 medals: silver in the discus with 11.47 metres, and bronze in both the javelin (10.05 metres) and the shot put (4.68 metres).

Gold in Dubai, honour at home

At the National Junior and Sub-Junior Para Athletics Championships in Bengaluru in 2024 she won silver medals in the shot put and discus, and at the World Ability Sport Youth Games in Thailand later that year she won gold in the javelin and silver in the discus and shot put. In December 2025, at the Asian Youth Para Games in Dubai, she won the gold medal in the women’s discus.

“I want to tell other children not to let any physical disability stop them,” she told The Tribune after the award. “Stay confident, keep moving forward, and success will definitely come.”

✳ A spark to explore

Jyoti trains far from home while keeping up with her schoolwork — what helps you keep going when something is difficult? That is a question from us, not part of her record.
