A family channel
When Piyush Kalra started the Aayu and Pihu Show on YouTube in May 2017, the channel had two young stars: his five-year-old son Aayu and his 11-year-old daughter Pihu. Scroll’s November 2018 Children’s Day report describes Pihu — full name Prakriti Kalra — as the elder half of what became one of India’s best-known Hindi children’s channels, made by a family in Kota.
Stories made by kids, for kids
The channel’s turning point, Scroll records, was Hindi moral stories “made by kids and for kids”. Its most popular video at the time, Ek Jhooth, had over 11 million views, and its story turns on Pihu’s character getting into trouble for telling a lie. Alongside the stories, the siblings made challenge videos; Pihu told Scroll her favourite was a challenge eating raw vegetables with Aayu.
The children contributed off screen too — their father said they helped finalise thumbnails and add their own flavour to the scripts. By June 2018 the channel had crossed one lakh subscribers, earning YouTube’s Silver Play Button, and by September 2018 it had six lakh.
On the family’s own website, Pihu introduces herself in her own words: “Hi, I am Prakriti the CTO (Chief Teenage Officer) of our house.” The same site records that the channel went on to receive YouTube’s Diamond Play Button for ten million subscribers in November 2020 — a channel milestone, shared with her brother; this story is Pihu’s own, and Aayu’s is told separately. Reporting on Pihu individually is limited — most coverage treats the siblings together — and no age beyond Scroll’s dated 2018 report is asserted. Pihu acted in stories that taught children not to lie — can a funny video teach a serious lesson better than a lecture? Why do you think so? That is a question from us, not part of her record.
