Gold in Thailand

Born on 14 December 2007 in Andhra Pradesh, Shivani Hosuru Uppara is a para-athlete who throws the shot put and the javelin in the F46 class. Born without a right arm, she is the daughter of vegetable vendors, and she trains with the Aditya Mehta Foundation, which scouted her and supports her through its programme linked with the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

Her first international results came at the World Abilitysport Games in Thailand in December 2023: in the under-20 javelin she threw 15.90 metres to win the gold medal, and in the shot put her 6.91 metres was the best mark by an F46 athlete in her event.

National titles, national honour

At the National Junior and Sub-Junior Para Athletics Championships in Bengaluru in July 2024, she won three gold medals — in the 100 metres, the shot put and the javelin. Later that year, at the World Ability Sport Youth Games in Thailand, she took gold in the under-20 shot put.

In December 2025 Shivani received the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, India’s highest civilian honour for children, in the Sports category; the official award list records her home district as Annamayya and her age as 17. In May 2026, at the 8th Indian Open International Para Athletics Championships in Bengaluru, she won bronze medals in both the shot put and the javelin.

✳ A spark to explore

Shivani practised for years before her first gold medal — what is one skill you would keep working at even if success took a long time? That is a question from us, not part of her record.
